As I considered the underlying themes of perseverance and strength in Maya Angelou’s ‘Still I Rise,’ I selected an old, yet still flourishing tree to symbolize those themes. In the image it is growing in dry desert landscape, but nevertheless making the best of its situation.I was inspired by these lines from the poem: “I rise / Up from a past that’s rooted in pain / I rise”.Through the utilization of greens and blues in the upper portion of the image I hope that this painting feels full of life and potential.
