Some notes from Emma Baldwin, the artist behind this piece:
When considering the underlying themes of perseverance and strength in Maya Angelou’s ‘Still I Rise,’ I selected a flower, growing in dry desert landscape, to symbolize those themes. I was inspired by these lines from the poem: “I rise / Up from a past that’s rooted in pain / I rise”.In this painting the vibrant red stands out against a white background, contrasted powerfully with the green stem and buds at the base of the flower. By focusing the viewer’s eye on the flower as the most important element of the painting, one should consider its experience and how it embodies themes of strength.
